Tommy Fury reveals unknown story about how British boxing legend Ricky Hatton had to thank for his time on Love Island
TOMMY FURY has revealed how British boxing legend Ricky Hatton unwittingly staged his stint on Love Island.
Fury was set to make his professional debut in late 2018 when his then trainer Hatton commented on the beauty of the lightweight.
And a remark about looking like a star on the hit reality show Love Island quickly sparked interest from ITV bosses in world champion Tyson’s younger brother.
Fury, 22, said BT Sport: “One day it was as I approached my pro debut at Ricky Hatton’s gym and Ricky did an interview saying,” He doesn’t look like Hughie or Tyson, he looks like he’s stepping out of Love Island “.
“And at the time, I didn’t know what it was, since I had never watched Love Island at all, I didn’t know what it was.
“And then a week or two later I got a call after workout, they called the gym office, and they come into the locker room and said, ‘ITV is on the phone, they want to talk to you. “.
“I was like ‘OK, a little weird’. So I called and they said ‘Oh, hey Tommy, blah, blah, blah, anyway, we’d love to have you on board for Love Island’s 2019 series if you like ”.
“I was like, ‘That’s very sweet, thank you’ – because I thought it was a game show or something.

“I said, ‘That’s very sweet, thank you very much but I have my professional fighting debut coming up, I have fights coming up, thank you very much but no thank you.”
Although he initially missed the opportunity to focus on his boxing career, luckily the fights failed.
This allowed Fury to put his ring career on hold and make the decision to accept Love Island’s offer.
He said: “Make a short story, after I debuted my fights were written in pencil and they were called off, so I turned to Ricky and I was like, ‘Well, what the hell I will do now? Keep training, I guess. ‘
‘REST IS HISTORY’
“Okay, well, I could do it anywhere if I don’t have anything coming up. So I called them back and I said, ‘What’s going on? What is it really about “.
“And they said, ‘OK, take a look at last season and call us back.’ So that’s exactly what I did, I looked at it and I was like, ‘Do you know what? Eight weeks in the sun, beautiful girls, tan, I can’t go wrong ”.
“I have no fights coming up, so I did and then I went to London, a few auctions and that was it, the rest is history.”
Fury, 2-0 at the time, went on to become a finalist along with now girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague and the pair have become big stars since leaving the villa.
The undefeated boxer recently moved up to 6-0 in his career and his time on the small screen has helped him make a name for himself away from Tyson.
Fury returns to the ring on August 29 against MMA fighter Anthony Taylor, 32, on YouTuber Jake Paul’s undercard.
And a win for the Love Island alumni sets up a huge celebrity clash with American rival Paul, 24, who is 3-0 in his own boxing career.
