British and Irish Lions tourists will have one last chance to impress coach Warren Gatland and earn a sacred place in the test team and with that a place in history.
For the Stormers, the goals will be a bit more vague, but they’ll want to stand up to the British and Irish Lions in a way that no other franchise or provincial team has.
Stormers head coach John Dobson said his team are well aware of the honor of having the opportunity to face the British and Irish Lions.
“Any game against the British and Irish Lions is a historic occasion and we will do all we can to do justice to the scale of this game.
“The team has been very disciplined in our bubble this week and now it’s about doing whatever we can on the pitch for 80 minutes,” he said.
Gatland has named a fully modified starting squad for Saturday’s game against the Stormers.
Stuart Hogg returns to don jersey 15 and takes over as captain after missing the last three games due to isolation protocols.
Irish center Robbie Henshaw enters for what will be his first game of the tour.
Harlequins opening half Marcus Smith enters his first game after being called up mid-round after a stellar performance in the English Premiership final.
After a superb recovery from injury, Alun Wyn Jones climbs onto the bench. It looked like the Welsh veteran would miss the tour when he left the pitch injured in the warm-up test against Japan.
Gatland said he was eager to give every player the opportunity to advocate for his inclusion on the test team.
“It’s an important game because it’s the last chance for the coaching staff to see the players play before the start of the test series.
“For Matchday 23 this is their last chance to claim a place in Tests, so I expect to see a very motivated group of players. It’s especially nice to be able to name Stuart Hogg to the team. He hasn’t had much luck on Lions tours thus far, so it will be great to see him go through the lime again with the captain’s armband.
“I am also delighted that Marcus is making his first start in the Lions jersey. I have been really impressed with his attitude since arriving at camp this week. He was like a sponge for information. Obviously it’s a tight turnaround from Wednesday’s game, but we’re pretty good. South Africa’s A game was a physical encounter – we always knew it would be – but we came out of it pretty much intact and ready to start over. Liam Williams will begin his return-to-play protocol after his HIA. “
