Gates’ double in the 13th round gives Rusk’s QF regional championship | Sports
NAVASOTA – Landon Gates pulled off a two-out double from left field that gave the Rusk Eagles a 3-1 win over China Spring in the 13e round of a player from Class 4A, Region II Quarter-final on a Thursday evening.
The Eagles (25-7) advance to the regional semi-final next week where they face series winner Orangefield-Sour Lake Hardin Jefferson – Orangefield leads the series, 1-0, after scoring a 3-2 victory . Thursday evening.
The Eagles tackled a run at the top of the first and the Cougars responded with a run of their own late in the second.
There was no extra score until Rusk scored two points in the top 13e inning.
Will Dixon left the frame being hit by a ground. Dixon moved up to second when Bryce Leonard dropped a sacrificial decay between the plateau and the mound.
After Tarrant Sunday reached base with a field error, Dixon advanced to third. Dixon was knocked out when he tried to score on a bunt from Wade Williams down the third baseline.
Trey Devereaux, who was running for Sunday, went too second, with Williams safe at the tree on the choice of defender.
Gates then got his go on the flat and he drove the ball into left field deep enough to score Devereaux and Williams.
On the mound of Rattler Field, JD Thompson, signed by Vanderbilt, gave his club eight solid working performances, allowing only one hit and one undeserved run. He crossed out 12 and did not walk anybody.
Mason Cirkel came in ninth place and went the rest of the way for the Eagles. Cirkel, who gave up four hits but no runs, walked three and stoked one, was the record-winning pitcher.
Kolby Killough and Brayden Faulkner had two hits apiece for the Cougars, who finished with a 27-5-2 record.
Cougar’s third pitcher Tristyn Pechacek struggled with the loss.
