Business owner catches burglar on surveillance video phone app
SPOKANE, Wash .– Police in Spokane have arrested a man for attempting to break into a Hillyard business after being caught by surveillance footage linked to the owner’s cell phone.
The business owner called the police and told them that she had received a security alert from an app on her phone, which allowed her to check surveillance video of her building. She said she saw two men enter a fenced area of her property with burglary tools.
She also told the police that she was out of town at the time.
Officers were dispatched to the company and found a suspect, later identified as Devin Johnson, 31, who attempted to escape and escape through a hole in the fence. Police quickly grabbed and arrested Johnson, finding he had several keys to vehicles parked in the fenced yard, and those vehicles were visibly ransacked.
Authorities say a second suspect has never been identified or located.
Johnson has been charged with two counts of second degree vehicle trespassing, one count of third degree malicious mischief and possession of burglary tools.
