Arthur reveals new Sikh character ahead of hour-long PBS special
Arthur will introduce a Sikh character in the upcoming one-hour special “Arthur’s First Day”. Starting September 6, the special starts Arthurthe 25th season. The episode, which was scheduled before the announcement that the upcoming season will be Arthur‘s last, tells of Arthur’s first day in fourth grade. It features Samir, a Sikh student, highlighted by his wearing a patka headgear and religious kara bracelet, both associated with Sikhism. However, the episode won’t bring Samir’s faith in the story any more than it did any other character in the long-running children’s animated series.
“In this special, which deals with the uncertainties of the first day of school, we wanted to raise awareness of the challenges that a child can [face] when we meet new classmates, but we don’t do the details of the clothes, in this case the patka, the focus, ”said executive producer Carol Greenwald CNN. “We did what we usually do – create a multidimensional character that Buster – and other kids – would be interested in dating. We also hope that kids who wear a patka or other cultural outfit will feel seen and portrayed on. our show. “
In “Arthur’s First Day,” according to the official episode synopsis, it’s finally day one of fourth year and Arthur couldn’t be more excited – until he learns that Buster is in another one. class ! Meanwhile, DW is nervous for her first day of kindergarten. Will Arthur and DW be able to make new friends?
Arthur has attempted to diversify his cast of characters in the past. Last year Arthur’s teacher Mr Ratburn turned out to be gay, leading some TV stations to refuse to air the episode.
“What we’re trying to do on the show is connect kids with other kids by mirroring their lives,” Arthur said creator Marc Brown (via Out). “In some episodes, like the one in Vermont, we validate children who are rarely validated. We think ‘Postcards From Buster’ does it in a very natural way – and, as always, from a children’s perspective.”
Arthur’s fans were heartbroken to learn of the show’s cancellation. However, a statement from Greenwald revealed that as the series wraps up, Arthur’s new content is still in production.
“In the winter of 2022, Arthur’s 25th and final season will debut. Arthur will continue to be available on PBS KIDS for years to come,” said Carol Greenwald, executive producer of the series. IGN. “Producer GBH and PBS KIDS continue to work together on additional Arthur content, sharing lessons from Arthur and his friends in new ways.”
